The Maps

Green course
Red course
Blue course (with Gary's route shown)

Start to 1, took the left out of the Stadium (start/finish) area, and towards the first control; the trail junction near the bridge caused me to slow to a stop - it must be the island of trees that confused me; anyway, through the junction and on to the first control. 1-2, just stay left, no choice. 2-3, again no real route choice here, just climb over Russian hill (the steepest climb on the map) and don't do anything dumb. 3-4 follow the one-way trail in a giant U-turn first S then N (the other route choice would have required quite a bit more climb). 4-5, on the first downhill section I refolded my map on the fly - just don't drop it! Through the stadium, bear left, under the road, and on to 5. 5-6 went down the dashed trail (probably should have stayed left on the skate trail, but going downhill there was little time difference). Through the 4 way junction, ducked under the caution tape (for the biathlon course) after pausing to make sure I wasn't breaking a rule, on to 6. 6-7 turned E then N, at the 2nd junction had to duck under caution tape again, which caused me to slow down and study the map for a few seconds, then on through to 7. Every time I came across the caution tape there were people stopped studying their maps; I must admit, the tape confused me briefly also, at first I wondered if the trail was closed. 7-8, back out the way I came in, under the tape (more people studying maps) and a sharp left, down the gentle hill and another sharp left to the control. 8-9, turned around, took a right, left at the Y, then the second right and a straight shot to 9. 9-10, headed S out of 9, then made a mistake and turned left instead of right. After 30m or so I realized my error and turned around; took the first left and down to the stream. I took the southern-most trail up the hill, past 5 and followed the trail next to the road into control 10. 10-11, I realized that the quicker route would be to take my skis off and cross the road, but I figured I was here to ski so I turned around and skied back to the road crossing (under the road) then up to 11 and to the finish.
