The Empire State Games Ski-O Champs have been going on for over 20 years now, and most of those years the event has been held on the trails of Mt. Van Hoevenberg. All championship orienteering events are intended to be held on "unfamiliar" terrain. However, the limited number of venues in the area immediately around Lake Placid, NY, ends up making this essentially impossible to achieve. Since I've been involved, we were able to shift to Garnet Hill once (to coincide with the first US Ski-O Champs held there), we've gone to Winona State Forest once when there was NO snow in Lake Placid, and we've used Dewey Mountain in nearby Saranac Lake three times (which is a small area, always requiring map exchanges, and possibly wildly variable/un-anticipatable grooming).
So, while the quasi-familiarity of Mt. Van does have a negative aspect, we end up going back there most years, because we know what to expect, we know how to work with the staff there, and it is the easiest to fit in with the other ESG Nordic events (and many people do more than just Ski-O: there are two Cross Country races, and two Biathlon races; we also have some crossover/conflict with Snowshoe racing and Speed Skating; not so much with Alpine, Ski-Jumping, Bobsled, Luge, Hockey and Figure Skating).
This leaves us with a need to constantly figure out ways to make each year's race competitive, interesting, and fresh. This is a pretty tall order after 20 years, and after setting the courses there myself at least 4 times (I've lost exact count by now). So, how do I (to steal from Apple) "Think Different" this one more time? I decided to try adding some new "minor" trails to the map.
Heading into the winter, I knew I was likely to either be Director of the event, or be the Course Setter, since Eric Hamilton and I have been swapping these duties for the last several years. But because of his various engagements and mine (host a Ski-O at Thacher Park in mid-January; travel to Ski-O series in California in late January-early February; pack up and send son off to China for a semester in mid-February), we didn't settle on my assignment as Course Setter until there were less than two weeks until the event.
Once I got the assignment, I tried to figure out days I could get to the venue for what I knew would be necessary map changes, as well as verifying control locations. In particular, I needed to scope out the areas I wanted to use for my minor trails. It's a 3 hour trip from my home to Lake Placid, and in the end I found I had two days to do the field work and have sufficient time after each of those days to do the OCAD work on the map updates/additions and the OCAD course setting.
As one of the two EMPO SI Coordinators, I also had the task of the preparatory work for using the SportIdent "e-punch" system, which we were introducing to the ESG Ski-O this year. On the basis of my limited past experience, I knew I needed to have all essential data pre-loaded into the OEvent software, including pre-assigning loaned SI stick numbers. I knew this would make it more difficult for the event's Registration staff, since they'd have to find the correct assigned "stick" for everyone, but I also knew they would far out-number me, and would have fewer tasks on race day.
Since we were working around the Presidents Day weekend, I figured my best days to work on the courses would be the Friday before, and the Tuesday after. On the Friday, I drove north and got to the Biathlon Stadium area by around Noon. From there I worked the North side of the existing map, primarily trying out my initial thoughts on minor trails. I ended up with saving two locations (and thus my own tracks in & out) as acceptable; I rejected one as too variable from the contour information shown on the existing map; and I spent a lot of time tracking and mapping one pre-existing snowshoe trail on the northernmost "Cascade" section of the map.
Back home after that, I re-drafted my courses, and identified where I needed to find reasonable other control locations. I then headed north Monday night in order to spend a full day on the trails on Tuesday: except, I got a flat tire soon after I hit the Saratoga County line. This resulted in a long enough delay to send me back home that night, and thus have only a half-day at Mt. Van on Tuesday. [There are more annoying details, but I'm leaving them out.]
Nonetheless, 4 hours of skiing on Tuesday did settle my mind on most of the control locations, and associated new trails. I still needed to see how his information affected my course plans, and my review at home that night resulted in my adding a few control points which I had not actually had a chance to visit (and thus tie an orange ribbon). Still, I chose those spots as ones which were either easily identified, or had been used previously (but long enough ago that they weren't an easy grab for this year's racers).
Between my initial "reasonable route" checking, and my actual flag hanging, every mapped track was skied in and out by me at least twice, and at least once in the more difficult direction. I never took off my skis, so no one can say that any of these trails were "un-skiable". It is possible that changes in the weather (which there were), or changes wrought by prior racers choosing to ski or walk, rendered some of the trails "un-skiable"; but that cannot be controlled by a course setter. Some of these trails were easier to handle going uphill, and others easier going downhill; but that's part of reading the map, and deciding how to approach each particular challenge.
In the end, the software setup worked just fine (my worst nightmare was avoided!). There were a few updates to make as some folks did bring along unannounced personal SI sticks. Later, some did complain (again) about our practice of just hanging the SI boxes through the control flag string. Personally, I don't see why this is such a problem, as I found it a non-issue over 4 days of Ski-O in California just this winter. But, the consistency of the complaints (or perhaps the "whining") has caused me to re-evaluate our situation, and I think I've found a better solution for next year, whoever may inherit the job of Course Setter.
Finally, as I picked up the last 6 controls on Sunday, I said (and am here saying) Thanks! to Victor Klassen, Martin Donnelly-Heg, Aims Coney, and Eric Hamilton for helping out by picking up the other controls. There were many other helpers, both at the ESG Finals and throughout the earlier "Qualifying" events this season. I can't list everyone, but nonetheless Thanks! to all of you for producing a fine season for New York in trying (warmer!) times.
