Even though the week prior to our Saturday local meet on April 12th at Moreau was extremely wet, it worked to our favor. Only two weeks before this relatively-gorgeous weather event, there was still over a foot of snow in some of the thicker-growth areas of the park. It turned out that the mild temperatures and rains melted this and the still frozen lakes down to deep Spring conditions. The sunny and warm race day was a sight to behold.
We offered four courses including RED, GREEN, ORANGE, and YELLOW with the higher skilled and longer courses using the SportIdent Electronic Punch timing system. Only Yellow used the punch card method.
The Moreau map is not extensive and the vast trail network there makes it difficult to entertain a technical orienteering course for runners at the top end of the sport. Longer legs and overall course length were typical of more challenging events but it was virtually impossible to find a good course setting feature that was more than a 200m off of any given trail. Nonetheless, Moreau is a wonderful park and the spring air made it exciting to be out in the forest.
Since the GREEN and ORANGE courses were built directly into the RED, runners on the various courses were sent in different starting directions but shared many controls. At over 8km, the RED at least offered a good workout to the competitively training event-star. Yellow participants didn't need to get too dirty as the 2.65km course was set on the easy side of the beginner level.
All-in-all we were extremely lucky with the outcome given the horrible forecast by our local weather folks.
We do hope everyone had as much fun running as Kathy and I had hosting the event. Offers and helping hands from Phil Hawkes-Teeter (SI-Tech/Pickup), Janet Tryson (Reg-Consultant) and Andy Chillrud (Control Pickup) made the day a little easier at the end. Finally, thanks to my wife Kathy Staats for joining me in the sport and giving her time to make this event a success.
