HOT TIMES, SUMMER IN THE SUBURBSThe mercury was trying to climb out of the thermometer on Saturday, when the last EMPO spring event for 2008 took place at Tawasentha Park in Guilderland. There had been thunderstorms the day before, and by mid-morning, the temps were in the low 90's, humidity was high and more thunderstorms were predicted for the afternoon. I had set the control flags and water stops by the time Phil Hawkes-Teeter showed up to set up his computer and SI equipment to work his usual magic. I was delighted when the participants started arriving, as I had been a little afraid the heat and threat of rain would keep them away. We had a preponderance of runners in the green/red category, and a relative few in the novice segments. We scored a new couple, Norm and Tricia Lathrop, as members. I was also glad to hear nothing but favorable comments on my course setting, as I am a relative amateur, with only 4 events under my belt as meet director. We held the annual membership meeting after the event, and decided to stay with the current slate of officers. Registration was assisted by Janet Tryson; starts, finishes, & SI management by Phil Hawkes-Teeter; and control pickup was done (as thunder sounded in the distance) by Phil, Glen Tryson, Cynthia Johnson, and myself. -Bob Lange |
