The Fall 1998 season opened up at Saratoga Spa State Park on September 12. Once the golf course, SPAC, and the hotel areas are removed, the map is pretty small. What it lacks in size, though, it more than made up for in interesting terrain. An extensive trail network wended its way through a landscape filled with gullies, streams, and steep hillsides. This was only the second meet that I directed on my own, and my first try at designing a red course. It took longer than expected to plan and put together, but it was gratifying to see so many people show up and enjoy it. The good weather (except for a few minutes of sprinkles) only made it better. In addition to the people thanked in the Meet Director's notes, I'd like to thank members who helped on the day of the meet: Jon Beatty came early to set up the registration area and help run the show. Phil Hawkes-Teeter, Eric Hamilton, and Nancy Allen helped me pick up the controls afterwards. Whether they came to WIN, enjoy the PLACE, or just decided to SHOW up, everyone seemed to have a good time. (Rumors to the contrary, EMPO members were not able to win money by playing "Pick 4" to guess the winners of each course. No exactas or trifectas either. The meet director apologizes to all those who confused our meet with the nearby horse track.) -Rich Ruh |
