[Empire State Games Ski-O]

2000-2001 Rules for Ski-O Qualifying and Points

To qualify for the Empire State Games (ESG) Ski-Orienteering competition, a skier must:

Points will be awarded to all finishers of the course appropriate for their ESG Class. The Course/Class structure is:

Masters is 40 & up; Scholastic is High School and younger. If a skier qualifies in more than one Class, that skier must notify the ESG Ski-O Coordinator (Phil Hawkes-Teeter) of the Class in which they wish to be qualified for the Empire State Games within 48 hours of the final qualifying race.

Points are awarded on the basis of ranking all potential ESG competitors in each Class as follows:

Order of FinishPoints
1st10
2nd7
3rd5
4th3
5th2
finish1

PLUS Bonus Points: each competitor is awarded 1 point for every person s/he beats on that course, as long as s/he is skiing in a race as long or longer than the category in which s/he is trying to qualify.

NOTE: Qualifying (and seeding for Start times) for the ESGs depends on the points you earn in the Class in which you are trying to qualify. You can only earn points in the Class you compete in for any given race. However, you may choose to race on a longer course than the one on which your Class is scheduled to compete. In that case, you can only earn Bonus points for beating other competitors on the course you actually ski, and no points for your placement. You do get credit for completing a Qualifier in your Class. For example: John Jones is 45, wants to qualify for the ESGs in the Masters Class, and the Masters Class is slated to ski the Medium course at Tug Hill. He chooses to ski the Long course, and comes in 4th beating 3 others (of any age/sex) who ski that course. In the Male Masters standings he earns 3 (for beating 3 others) but nothing for placement since he didn't ski the Masters course.

POINTS FOR MEET DIRECTORS: Because it takes a lot of work, and then they can't compete in their event, Meet Directors earn credit for completing one Qualifier by virtue of holding a race. Often at least one other person can't compete because they had to hang flags or do course checking or something, so the Meet Director may designate one other individual who earns similar credit. The maximum number of individuals who earn credit this way at any one race is two. In the Standings they will be awarded 10 points.
